“Women in Music”, “Female Artists” – these are longstanding labels that categorize by gender, part of a long line of inequality on the airwaves and in the music industry at large. In fact, it is still rare to hear womxn’s voices back to back on the radio and female-identifying hosts and programmers are still in the minority. Wherever you look, the statistics showing gender inequality across the board in music – from festival line-ups to the GRAMMYs are staggering. In 2020, as we answer the urgent call to issues of diversity and inclusion, longtime radio personality Carmel Holt is on a mission to make sure that gender inclusion is on the agenda.
Carmel Holt’s new radio show – SHEROES – will begin broadcasting on nine NPR affiliate stations this fall and winter, with more to be announced in the coming weeks. Holt, who has a 25-year old career in radio broadcasting under her belt, has been diligently working on SHEROES since leaving WFUV in New York last year. Each week, Carmel presents a fresh and eclectic mix of both newcomers and familiar names in combining a carefully curated playlist together with a featured in-depth conversation with a SHERO In The Spotlight, showcasing a range of both music and guests that span generations, with an eye towards lifting up new voices while recognizing and celebrating womxn who paved the way. With a SHEROES original theme song by Lucius, Holt has lined up episodes with luminaries such as Roseanne Cash, Sharon Van Etten, Yola and kicking off with Rhiannon Giddens. More guests to be announced in the coming weeks.
By creating a space devoted to the most talented and successful womxn in music together to share stories, SHEROES aims to unveil the truth of womxn’s experiences and to build awareness, understanding, inspiration and move towards gender equality.
